It’s the (safe) outdoor life for me!!

Well Autumn’s coming to a close, the trees are bereft of their leaves, and the long dark evenings are well and truly with us.  But that doesn’t mean we have to hibernate…

Winter evenings and nights can be fantastic times for a walk.  A brisk walk on a frosty evening (or early frosty morning for that matter) can leave the body feeling revitalised, the mind refreshed and the soul cleansed.  Walking is great exercise, and it doesn’t cost much when compared to gym costs.

Safety is a key concern however, and most drivers I’m sure have gotten frights and been annoyed by walkers and cyclists who are not adequately lit up when on the roads at night time.  To be safe, you must be seen, so the essentials are bright coloured clothing, and if possible some reflective or Hi-Visibility items such as arm bands or vests.  In addition to being seen though you will also need to be able to see, to avoid unforeseen obstacles such as potholes, steps and of course animal droppings, so in addition we recommend that you carry a torch for all your night time excursions.   Of course walking at night-time doesn’t have to be limited to roadside walking, a walk along the beach or in a forest in the stillness of a Winter’s night can be rather exhilarating!!   And even though we’re not personally into the extreme sports ourselves, we know that there are those who go mountain biking and orienteering by night also, and obvoiusly a torch (or several of them) are absolute necessities for these activities.
